Preparations for water and sanitation upgrades in eThekwini municipality are already underway, according to the local government in the area. Bosch Projects and Bosch Capital recently completed conceptual wastewater feasibility studies and financial modeling for eThekwini’s water and sanitation service. The scope of services included the development of conceptual infrastructure for the catchment districts of Umlazi and Umhlatuzana of the municipality of eThekwini.

These studies will serve as a “master plan” for water and sanitation upgrades in the municipality of eThekwini. They will provide a strategic motivation for large-scale sanitation and infrastructure investments in these watersheds in the short, medium and long term.

According to Jason Holder, Wastewater Division Manager at Bosch Projects KZN, the aim and objectives of the Bulk Sanitation / Wastewater Catchment Studies were to provide the most beneficial options to optimally serve key sites. in the medium and long term.

These studies included analysis of housing plans for human settlements, areas with lagging sanitation and future development areas, and estimation of the impact on current and future bulk sanitation infrastructure. These wastewater feasibility studies were based on a high level concept that included infrastructure built for fully developed watersheds.

This water and sanitation project in the municipality of eThekwini, which is expected to cost more than R 1 billion. It will cover 43,000 hectares and serve 1.2 million people, including a backlog of over 280,000 people who currently do not have access to sanitation.

The financial modeling and cost-benefit analysis of the project included the capital costs of the new infrastructure. The operating costs were also calculated using actual data provided by the eThekwini wastewater operation department. Metrics such as net present value, internal rate of return, payback, and discounted payback time were then used to produce a life cycle costing technique. This involved evaluating the project’s returns for each possible scenario over the next 20 years.

The Bosch Projects and Bosch Capital teams also worked closely with key stakeholders in the Municipality of eThekwini to gather the information, guidance and permissions needed for future projects. They also ensured the efficient completion of a project well designed to meet the needs of the client.
