Council voted one last time Monday on a zoning change to allow the unoccupied Lansdowne Street West Deco Deco store in Rye Street to be subdivided into smaller stores.

The move is expected to allow Cosmaroma Home Renovation Supplies – a Canadian-owned and operated chain selling discounted home improvement items – to open a store in half of the former Home Outfitters space.

Déco Découverte – which has been empty since 2019 – is the largest one-place store that also includes Jysk, Boston Pizza, and Starbucks.

The Hudson’s Bay Company announced in early 2019 that it was closing its 37 Home Decor stores in Canada by the end of the year, including the one in Peterborough.

The rezoning and Official Plan changes will allow Cosmaroma to use half the space – and allow other subdivisions to add other businesses as well – now that council has ratified the plan.

Cosmoroma would like to open in September.

Financial recovery

Council voted one last time on a new plan to cover a $ 3.7 million shortfall the city faces so far this year due to lost revenue and additional costs from the pandemic of COVID-19.

The recovery plan, according to a new report from city staff, includes the use of city reserves, other grants and surpluses in city services that have not been affected by the pandemic.

Summer games

Council voted one last time to host the Ontario 55+ Summer Games in 2022, as this summer’s games – scheduled to take place in Peterborough – have been canceled for a second year in a row due to COVID- 19.

The 55+ Summer Games are the provincial championships for adults aged 55 and over who have qualified in their district to participate in sports such as swimming, running, bowling and golf.

Health care moves

Council voted one last time to allow a Harper Road company to add a second warehouse to its property.

Health Care Relocations is headquartered in central Canada at 670 Harper Road. in the south of the city. The company provides relocation services for hospitals.

The company has a two story building on Harper Road which is a combined office and wants to add a second building as another warehouse / office.

A roof

Council voted one last time that the One Roof Community Center will continue to provide lunches and drop-in at St. John’s Anglican Church on Brock Street in downtown for another two years when the current contract expires at the end of 2021.
