With the median price of homes in the Phoenix metro area now at $ 450,000, some buyers are looking for alternatives.

They include much smaller places called “little houses”.

Homes can be custom built, and the price is usually only a fraction of the cost of a traditional home.

James LeVar thought it would be perfect for him.

He’s a double amputee after being run over by a drunk driver and he doesn’t want a lot of space.

“My last house was 865 square feet and it was too big for me,” he says.

When James saw a bespoke container house at All Star Storage and Container in Apache Junction, it was sold.

It’s a 25ft long by 8ft wide sea container filled with almost everything it would need.

“There was a toilet, there was a sink, there was air conditioning, a place for the bed a sliding door, it’s just a small house,” says James.

He bought a container for storage.

Then James bought three more containers, two that would form a garage and the other was turned into his house.

He paid $ 32,500 for the three containers that would be placed in the large backyard of his son’s family home.

“He moved here on the condition that we buy a house with land and that he could install a small house on our property,” says his daughter-in-law Amy LeVar.

While James was able to have the storage container and the two garage containers delivered, they waited for the container house.

No delivery date is indicated on the contract.

James says he was told it would take eight weeks for the house to be completed.

The owner of All Star Storage says he told James it would take three or four months.

Regardless, five months after James signed the contract, he still had no home or due date.

The texts show that the company gave James completion dates that came and went without delivery.

All Star Storage and Container says the house was 90% complete, but they couldn’t find a plumber to finish it.

They texted this information to the family and offered a full refund, which the family didn’t want.

So James let me know.

We contacted the company.

The owner has accepted a new delivery date in a few weeks.

But it didn’t even take that long.

The house was delivered and we were there to see that James was a happy man.

“I love the place, I love the place,” he told us.

With a porch and a railing, James even wants to add by saying, “I’d look to put a little swing on it as corny as that is.”

There is a bed, a shower, a kitchenette and more.

“The interior is beautiful, the little knick-knacks here make it quite beautiful,” says James.

He says there were some plumbing and electrical issues that he fixed before moving in.

The owner of All Star Storage and Container Sales said the house was 90% complete, but the demand for plumbers was “the highest I have seen in 15 years.”

He says custom builds take time, they built it for less and finished it sooner than anyone else and when the “customer got unhappy we offered a full refund” .

Before signing a contract for something that needs to be delivered or work done, make sure you have a start or delivery date written into your contract.

Here are some more comments on All Star container storage and sales:

Jim Levar purchased 2 items on the same invoice. The first was a 20ft x 16ft garage / workshop container that was already built and the second was a 25ft x 8ft house container that needed to be built. An initial deposit was made on December 21st which was applied to the 20 ‘x 16’ Garage Container This garage / workshop container was delivered to Jim Levar on December 31st.

Several weeks later, on January 19, Jim came to pay for the 25 ‘x 8’ house container. Jim learned that the build time was 3-4 months. Jim and / or his son stopped by our yard at least 4 times from February to April to observe the progress. By the end of April, the 25ft x 8ft home container was 90% complete and needed only plumbing and finishing touches. At that time the commercial plumbing company we use was in the middle of a large commercial project .. Jim and his son were made aware of the delays with the plumber …

I have done my best to explain that the demand for plumbing contractors is / was the highest I have seen in the past 15 years. I explained that we have a great relationship with the plumbing company, but our jobs are comparatively very small compared to the commercial projects they primarily work on. If things had progressed as before the girls’ involvement, the delivery could have taken place 1 to 2 weeks earlier than the due date of June 4.

This was a custom version and custom versions of any type take time. Looking back, I really wish I would have done a better job preparing them in time to go from 90% to 100%. The customer sees that they only have one day left to complete, but may have difficulty when that day’s work will not be done for 2 weeks or more. The relationship was very relaxed with Jim and his son, they got to the point where they went to the container in the yard and then came to the office. Everyone in the yard has come to know and appreciate them.

I know they were upset when they contacted you, but I hope both sides of the story are represented fairly as the story goes public. On a positive note, I’m sure we built the container 25-50% less than anyone and finished it sooner than anyone else. We are a small family business that works very hard to provide a great product and great service with the goal of keeping all of our customers happy. At the first sign that this customer had become unhappy, we offered a full refund. We acted in good faith throughout this transaction and I have always been honest with Jim and his family. “
